http://girlzafriq.com/ : The Authentic Abode Of African Beauty
Esther/ED: Tell us about Girlz Afriq
Maro/GA: girlzafriq.com is a website that promotes African beauty.
We strongly believe in African beauty. Girlz Afriq primarily is a movement that
is all about beauty and fashion. There
are so many beautiful Africans around the world but we are focusing on the
ladies for now. This is because we have discovered that the African woman is
becoming more aware of herself. A lot of
emphasis has been placed on the African man in the past but the African woman
is now looking for diverse ways to express herself and her uniqueness. One way
is via pictures. If you look well at the picture of the average African lady on
social media platforms, you would see that she is trying to express something
unique about herself.
The website
girlzafriq.com is an online community and there are lots of sections that will
be of interest to both male and female. In
the nearest future, it will include an online store and we would have stylists
on board who could help you get a particular look and outfit that you find on
pictures from the website. We would also
flag a modeling agency that will enable interested persons.
I believe because
it’s an online community, there is no limit to its exploits. We would only be
driven by the response and demands of members of the community. More features
will unfold as time goes by.
I’d like to include that we don’t support or promote nudity
in any way. The inflow of pictures is
very much controlled by our team.
Esther/ED: How do you intend to bring balance and
make sure that you are not misunderstood by society since it’s an all ladies
affair for now?
Maro/GA: In terms of selecting pictures, we have a large category
and we believe every lady has her own uniqueness which will fit into any of the
categories. For example, we give participants an option of sending 15 pictures
and at least we would find 2 0r 3 pictures that are suitable to be placed on
the platform.
In terms of not
to be misunderstood or misinterpreted, like I said we are very much not in
support nudity.
Esther/ED: What are the criteria for being on
girlzafriq.com?
Maro/GA: First of all, you
have to be an African. As long as you identify with Africa, you are on. For example,
your father could be Congolese and your mum American, to us you are an African.
Or perhaps you have African roots but the
color of your skin is white, we still take you as an African. There are some Africans whose skin colors are
white, for example most Ethiopian ladies don’t look like Africans at all.
We’ve had some
white girls post their pictures on our wall on instagram but we just say ok but
don’t post because it doesn’t go with our mission. The platform is only for the
showcase of African beauties.
Secondly, it’s
not really about how fine you are. When we
started initially, we were posting pictures of extremely attractive ladies. But we are also looking for a ladies’ fashion
sense.
For example we have a category called ‘The Art of Perfect Selfie’, now
this selfie category has been divided into other categories like ‘selfie in the
car’, ‘selfie in your room’ and so on.
Therefore, pictures showcased depend on what
you wear and what your picture says. We
don’t want anyone to just snap a picture and send to us.
You don’t have to
be the finest girl in the world but your picture has to be unique. We believe
you will have some unique feature about you that makes you stand out. It could
be your fashion sense, your shape, or skin tone.
Esther: You know it’s
an all women affair and you know how ladies can be. We love to talk and can also be very jealous
of ourselves. How do you handle the idea of not been seen as partial especially
if a lady’s picture could not make the platform?
Maro/Girlz Afriq:
Like I said every lady has a huge opportunity to be on the platform. You are
allowed to send as much as 15 pictures and no matter how bad it is at least 2
should be suitable for post. I emphasize again that we are looking for that
unique feature, it’s not about how beautiful a lady is but about her own
uniqueness and what her picture communicates.
There is no
discrimination or partiality on girlzafriq.com. We don’t even know most of the
ladies. Some of them are from Congo, Botswana, Eretria and some Nigerians who
are based in different countries abroad.
We have a
laudable feedback system where we get back to intended participants.
We strongly
believe that girlzafriq.com will aid the growth of the Nigerian fashion
industry and beyond.
Esther/ED: How
can one participate?
Maro/Girlz Afriq:
There is a submit link that persons who are interested can participate.
