If you have ever given your marketing staff a basket of products or a pile of company brochures and sent them out under the hot Lagos sun, with barely enough transportation fare to go market your ‘premium’  product and yet expect result- YOU ARE A MAGA!


If after they have roamed round the city of Lagos and they got back tired, smelly with their shoes all dusty and bringing you disappointing news.  Basket intact, they came the way they left – no results.  And yet you got so disappointed and decided to yell at them and make them feel guilty. You even decided to sack them, if no result. YOU ARE A MEGA MAGA.



Your marketing problem starts with you. You have no idea of what marketing is yet you went ahead to start what you probably don’t know how to finish.  Would you treat yourself if you discovered you need urgent medical attention? Why not? Because you are not a medical doctor.


So, are you a marketing expert?
  

Right answer.  I thought as much.


Oga,  get proper marketing knowledge.  Consult with a marketing expert or hire one on part time or full time.  Draw a marketing plan and get a direction for your marketing.

Marketing is not sales. Sales is only an aspect of marketing.  Marketing is wider than you could imagine



2.      Marketing is for the Marketing department only

Sir, marketing starts from your gate. Yeah, I mean your gate man all the way down to your chewing gum secretary.  Marketing is about how you do what you do. How your company deliver ‘it’ to the customer. Think marketing whenever you make relevant company decisions


3.      Marketing is by chance

Marketing is an investment and will not be a waste of money or time if you channel your resources right and do your proper home work.


4.      All you need is for your marketing staff to just go out

First of all, your entire marketing department needs a re-orientation about what marketing really is.  Better still, they need an orientation about what their job really is. Your team needs absolute knowledge of your product or service. They need knowledge about your company. They need to understand product benefits and features and to be able to relate them well to prospects. They need to be able to represent your company appropriately.  So, invest in your marketing team so that they give you returns


5.      The marketing unit is the slavery department

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beeeepppp..

Crappy Idea!  Do not treat your marketing staff less!  Treat your marketing staff right. In fact, treat them like the Kings and Queens of the company.  They need all the morale support they can get from you.  Ensure that the other staffs respect them and give them what they need to get the job done.  Invest in your marketing team.  Try to give them all they need to get the job done.  Remember, no customer, no business.


Seriously, that's all I can tell for now. 

I just want to give you a basic idea and knock off those yeye ones you have about marketing in your head.  This segment is about practical marketing solutions. ‘Sharp sharp’ solutions, the applicable ones, you know.  I will start giving that from next week.
